We have all heard the word DETOX. Do we fully understand what this means.

It was the winter of 2006, when I had a very tough time in life with being in and out of emergency rooms and hospital stays multiple times. It was during one of the recovery sessions at home, that a Mental health worker, who was assigned to follow up on me introduced me to the word DETOX. That was when I learnt that Detox is a process of abstaining not just the Body but also the Mind of everything unhealthy and toxic.

Over the years, I have learnt and experienced a few Detox methods. Cleansing the major organs, cleansing the mind, cleansing the blood and cleansing emotions. A process in which I try and reset and recharged myself.

The human body has its own natural way of detoxing every day. The elimination of undigested food and breathing out of carbon dioxide are a couple of examples. The skin too works to eliminate as sweat through pores and sweat glands. Sometimes, apart from these natural detox methods, the body needs additional help in getting rid of toxins that get built up for various reasons over a period of time.

Some of the symptoms that call for a detox are

  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Sluggish elimination
  • Irritated skin
  • Allergies
  • Low-grade infection that does go with medication
  • Puffy eyes or bags under the eyes
  • Bloating
  • Menstrual problems
  • Mental confusion

Physical Detoxification involves cleansing the physical body. This is done by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination.

The body eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. However, when these systems are compromised, impurities aren’t properly filtered and the body is adversely affected.

Physical Detox involves

  1. Resting the organs through fasting. Intermitted fasting is one way of resting the organs on a regular basis.
  2. Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body. This can be achieved thru’ following a raw diet or plant based diet.
  3. Improving circulation of the blood. This can be achieved thru’ physical exercise.
  4. Refueling the body with healthy nutrients

Detox programs focus on a planned cut back of toxins with a focus to naturally Cleanse, Purify and Renew.

There are many detox programs and detox recipes. Choose the one that best suits your needs. Most detox programs follow a 3-5-7 days schedule as it takes the body that much time to cleanse the blood.

Fasting serves as a healthy way of detoxing. Most programs involve fasting on liquids for the initial two days, followed by a carefully planned diet which allows the digestive system to rest, cleanse and refuel.

Some of the popular detox diets are

  1. Simple Fruit and Veggie Detox
  2. Smoothie Cleanse
  3. Juice Cleanse
  4. Sugar Detox

Apart from the popularly practiced  Physical detox, there are other Detoxes too that need to be considered for the overall wellbeing.

  • Emotional
  • Mental
  • Surrounding

During the current pandemic and lockdown scenario, most of us have seen, heard or experienced the overflow emotions, which is unhealthy.

The brain cannot function simultaneously from an emotional state and an intelligent state. They are two different parts of the brain.

Therefore, the awareness and assessment to create calmness and clarity becomes absolutely necessary.

An emotional detox cleanses negative emotions. It is like clearing a traffic jam. All congested thoughts will begin to flow freely, making room for clarity of thought and calmness.

This can be achieved by

  1. Writing a journal
  2. Walking, Jogging or Running outdoors
  3. Cleaning your work space

The mind is a very powerful or an equally destructive tool. The mind includes cognitive aspects such as imagination, perception, thinking, as well as noncognitive aspects such as emotion and instinct.

Three basic areas are the conscious mind, the subconscious mind, and the unconscious mind.

The quickest ways I have experienced to detox the mind is through

  1. Physical activity like Yoga or going to the Gym
  2. Positive affirmation
  3. Meditation

This detox is often overlooked but is one of the most important as it produces immediate results. Detoxing our surroundings can be as simple as cleaning your home or work space, letting in fresh air and sunlight and being surrounding by plants.

Some of the things that need to be removed are

  1. Harmful Chemicals
  2. Digital media
  3. Radiation
  4. Toxic Conversations
  5. Loud sounds

A detox can have several benefits depending on which one you choose. The benefits can range from physical, mental, emotional, energetic, or spiritual purification of impurities.

The benefits of Detox are many. Some of which are

  • Improved energy
  • Weight loss
  • Stress reduction
  • Mental and Emotional Clarity
  • Clearer Skin
  • Improved Quality of Life
  • Resetting and recharging the Body

The information presented here is based on my own experiences, learnings and research and must not be intended as a substitute for medical counseling.
